"Lotus" is a 4,000-year-old English vernacular with no botanical anchor. Egyptian art uses the blue water lily as the "sacred lotus of the Nile"; Asian iconography uses Nelumbo nucifera as "sacred lotus." Vendors and casual readers routinely conflate them. The alkaloid overlap is one compound (nuciferine); the receptor profiles diverge.

Where the comparison breaks
claims that don't transfer- "Blue lotus gets you high like cannabis." False. The receptor profile (D1/D2 antagonist + 5-HT2A partial) is closer to atypical antipsychotics than to THC. Subjective reports describe relaxation and dream enhancement, not intoxication.
- "Sacred lotus and blue lotus are the same plant." False — different families, different alkaloid profiles, only nuciferine shared. They occupy different ethnomedical niches.
- "Kanna is the closest pharmacological cousin to blue lotus." Partially true. Mesembrine (Sceletium) is a SERT inhibitor — closer to an SSRI mechanism than to aporphine. They pair well but aren't equivalents.
- "Damiana has aporphine alkaloids." False. Damiana's chemistry is flavonoid + arbutin + pinocembrin; it doesn't share a class with blue lotus.
- "All of these are legal everywhere." False. Kanna is regulated in some EU states (novel food); passionflower is regulated for OTC anxiolytics; mugwort thujone content is regulated under EU flavoring law. Always check current jurisdiction.
